Applicants to the M.S. Computer and Information Technology (CIT) program are admitted pursuant to graduate faculty decisions. In selecting candidates, the program’s priority is to assemble appropriately diverse MS student cohorts with significant potential for becoming technology leaders.
Admissions are highly selective because the number of applications typically exceeds the faculty's capacity to mentor students through the plan of study and thesis requirements. Because of the department’s parallel commitment to undergraduate education, it is necessary to maintain the graduate enrollment within reasonable limits.
The M.S. in CIT program does not offer conditional admission as an alternative to incomplete admissions credentials (such as test scores, official transcripts, etc.).
Admission Criteria
The admissions process selects highly qualified applicants into the MS program by considering each of the following criteria in judging the overall strength of the applicant. Typically, no single criterion is used as a sole determinant for admission.
- A relevant, earned baccalaureate degree in computer science, information technology, computer engineering, information systems, informatics, or other computer-related field of study. Minimally, students should have earned 15-18 credit hours of computational coursework. Students with insufficient academic preparation, in the faculty’s judgment, may be conditionally admitted but required to develop additional computing competencies by enrolling in designated undergraduate courses prior to undertaking their graduate study.
- An undergraduate grade point average of 3.00 or better (on a 4.00 scale) from accredited institutions is required for unconditional admission.
- Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores at or above the 50th percentile (for each test subsection) are required for unconditional admission. There is no minimum score expectation. The GRE is not waived for admission to this program.
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required for international applicants whose first language is not English and who have not graduated from a university or college using English as the language of instruction. The following minimum scores are required for the Internet-based TOEFL: Overall 90, Reading 20, Listening 20, Speaking 20, and Writing 20. For the paper-based TOEFL, the minimum score is 600.
- Demonstration of a high level of competence in written communication as evidenced by a writing sample such as the statement of purpose, a prior thesis, a research paper, or other significant and personally written product.
- Personal and professional characteristics commensurate with success in the computer and information technology profession.
Note: the faculty evaluators may also require a personal interview, usually by phone.
Admission Application Deadlines
Early application is encouraged. Program capacity is limited and it is recommended that students apply early for maximum consideration. Candidates for admission must have submitted all necessary application materials by the deadlines indicated below.

Items to be Included in an Complete Admission Application
Applicants must submit the following items to create a complete application package suitable for review.

Required: Purdue University Graduate College On-Line Application Form along with the application fee as specified.
NOTE: When applying you must specify Computer and Information Technology as your requested program. Computer and Information Technology is NOT the same as Computer Science. -
Required: Official GRE scores, submitted electronically to Purdue University. Use the institution code, 1631.
NOTE: You can apply for admission without the GRE scores; however, the GRE scores must be submitted prior to formal application consideration. - Required: Official TOEFL scores (Test of English as a Foreign Language), submitted electronically to Purdue University. Use institution code 1631. TOEFL scores are only required for international applicants whose first language is not English, or who have not graduated from a university or college using English as the language of instruction.
- Required: Computer & Information Technology will accept unofficial transcripts and/or academic documents uploaded through the online application system for review purposes. However, you will need to provide official transcripts and/or academic records at the request of Computer & Information Technology, or if you are recommended for admission.
- Required: A detailed, reflective Statement of Purpose highlighting career goals, capabilities to be developed, and a self assessment highlighting both strengths and weaknesses. You may also reflect on any irregularities or special circumstances applicable to your background, or elaborate on your special abilities, awards, achievements, publications, and/or professional history.
- Required: At least three letters of recommendation from faculty or individuals with an earned masters or doctoral degree. These letters should attest to the applicant’s potential for successful graduate study. The university requires use of a standard form followed by the recommender's statement.
- Required: A detailed resume’ or vita that describes your education, work history, significant skills, etc.
- Recommended: A writing sample that documents a high level of competence in written communication such as a prior thesis, research paper or report, or other significant personally written product.
