Assistant/Associate Professor – Smart Manufacturing

The School of Engineering Technology at Purdue University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position with a 9-month academic appointment at the Assistant or Associate Professor level in the area of smart manufacturing. The position will support strategic focus areas of the School within smart manufacturing from the context of digitalization and Industry 4.0. This position will be at the West Lafayette campus.

Qualifications

Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer engineering, industrial engineering, or a related discipline. Candidates must demonstrate effective English-language oral and written communication skills through documented classroom effectiveness or external engagement activities.

Teaching Expectations

The Purdue Polytechnic transformation requires faculty with both high technical competence and the ability and desire to teach in active classrooms. The successful candidate will teach students in the accredited Manufacturing Engineering Technology program, with a focus on the Smart Manufacturing Industrial Informatics (SMII) major that will be offered beginning Fall 2022. Relevant, recent industrial experience or prior teaching experience are highly desirable.

In addition to teaching, the successful candidate will be expected to aid in curriculum development for the SMII major. The candidate will have a strong background in Industry 4.0, functional and technical knowledge of smart manufacturing and cyber-physical manufacturing systems with expertise in AI/ML, data analytics, data-driven modeling and optimization leading to “manufacturing intelligence” to improve efficiency and productivity of manufacturing operations. The successful candidate will also participate in our graduate program, teaching new and existing graduate classes, and mentoring graduate students at both the M.S. and Ph.D. levels.

Research Expectations

The applied research portfolio of the School of Engineering Technology crosses the disciplines of Mechanical Engineering Technology, Manufacturing Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, and Industrial Engineering Technology, with focus areas in materials, robotics and the Internet of Things (IoT), mechatronics, smart and additive manufacturing, energy systems, healthcare technologies, and supply chain systems.

The successful candidate for this position is expected to conduct research to support the development of Smart Manufacturing initiatives of the School of Engineering Technology. The scope of the research includes but is not limited to areas such as smart automation; smart production monitoring and control; smart asset management and maintenance; AI/ML powered digital twins, predictive/prescriptive analytics; augmented reality and human-machine interaction; cloud computing applications in cyber-physical production systems; and smart supply chain. The successful candidate is expected to develop an independent, externally funded research program in a chosen research area, and to sustainably support graduate students.

The successful candidate is expected to interface with external clients, both commercial and governmental, and to establish relationships with companies looking for ways to engage with our students at all levels from undergraduate to Ph.D. This may take the form of mentoring senior capstone teams as well as graduate and undergraduate research.
