The Purdue Polytechnic Institute at Purdue University invites nominations and applications for the position of Head, School of Aviation & Transportation Technology (SATT) to administer a multi-talented and diverse group of faculty and aviation professionals pursuing a common goal of global excellence in learning, discovery, and engagement in the aviation and aerospace professions.
The successful candidate will be a high-energy, visionary, and goal-oriented individual who provides leadership through dynamic undergraduate and graduate programs, innovative and diverse engagement activities, and cutting-edge research. The school serves over 800 students in state-of- the-art facilities located at the historic Purdue University Airport on the West Lafayette campus. The school offers BS degree programs in Professional Flight, Aeronautical Engineering Technology, Aviation Management, Aerospace Financial Analysis, Airline Management and Operations, Airport Management and Operations, and Unmanned Aerial Systems. The school also offers the MS degree in Aviation and Aerospace Management, and a newly approved Ph.D. in Aviation Technology.
As the SATT chief academic and administrative officer, the head must possess proven leadership and management skills to work effectively with faculty, students, staff, industry partners, and the university administration. Operational/business experience in aviation or a related aerospace profession is preferred. The head is the safety executive of record for the school and the overall aviation operation, and is responsible for budgeting, personnel management, faculty mentoring, and curriculum development coordination. SATT is a global leader in aviation and aerospace, and the head is expected to support the faculty in increasing research and implementing transformational educational efforts. The head is expected to foster strong partnerships with industries, agencies, supporters, and peer universities; advocate and participate in securing grants; and provide leadership in fund-raising and development. The head also provides leadership for the Indianapolis Polytechnic Statewide location and the SATT distance-delivered M.S. program and the online program offered through Purdue Global.
Successful candidates are required to have an earned doctorate in aviation, aerospace, education, or a related field. Candidates should possess a proven record of accomplishment in a combination of research, scholarly endeavor, professional service, and/or experience in teaching and industry. Experience in aviation or aerospace programs at the university level is desired, along with a demonstrated record of effective leadership and shared governance. Ideal candidates will also possess high interest and strong ability in corporate/alumni development and global activities. The head must possess the credentials appropriate for appointment at the rank of full professor with tenure at Purdue University.
SATT is the home of research entities including the Air Transport Institute for Environmental Sustainability, the National Test Facility for Fuels and Propulsion, Airline Operations Center, A3IR CORE, and Hangar of the Future. The FAA Center of Excellence for General Aviation research (known as PEGASAS) is centered at Purdue and is led by faculty from the School of Aeronautics and Astronautics (College of Engineering) and SATT (Polytechnic).
