Tenure-Track Assistant Professor

The Department of Computer Graphics Technology at Purdue University has a full-time opening on the West Lafayette, Indiana campus, beginning in August 2018. This position is for a Tenure-Track Assistant Professor. The Game Development and Design program at the West Lafayette location is a growing program. We grant Bachelor, Master, and Doctoral degrees and are a world-renowned public land grant institution. We are a research-intensive department focused on applied research that is heavily engaged with industry.

Our program is technically oriented and focused primarily on the engineering and design domains of the engineering, animation, design triad of game development. As a result, we have had our greatest placement success in the areas of programming, technical art, and technical direction with many alumni working within the highest echelons of our industry. We are presently seeking to expand our abilities in aesthetic domains while enhancing our success in the aforementioned technical domains.

Principal Duties

The successful candidate for this position will teach and develop undergraduate and graduate courses, conduct research, mentor and advise graduate students, and perform service for the department, university, and discipline. The candidate will be required to develop and teach a variety of courses including but not limited to game programming, game design, game art asset creation, real-time rendering, game animation, simulation, and other subjects in a game development curriculum.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate would be an experienced professional game developer skilled in some combination of programming, modeling, VFX, or design. They must hold a terminal degree (Ph.D. MFA) in a field related to game development. Related fields include but are not limited to: computer science, computer graphics, fine arts, game design, game studies, media studies, animation, virtual/augmented reality, engineering, technology, and other related disciplines.

Candidates must be committed to innovative active learning-based undergraduate and graduate teaching, funded research, maintaining an inclusive and diverse learning environment, industry engagement, curriculum/program building, and service to the educational gaming community. A primary responsibility of the candidate will be to help create and implement a curricular vision that will expand the game development programs quality and reach. Establishing funded interdisciplinary projects that produce impactful research is expected and required. Working well with and teach diverse groups/diverse students is a strength of our program and a hard requirement for the position. Credited work experience on a shipped commercial game is highly preferred and experience in virtual reality, augmented reality technology a plus.
