N. Athula Kulatunga, Ph.D. CEM  (Certified Energy Manager)
is a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technology at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana., USA.  He has been performing energy assessment for industrial and commercial sectors as a Certified Energy Manger (Association of Energy Engineers, AEE) for last 15 years. He is the founder of two industry sponsored applied research labs at Purdue – 1) Power Electronics Development and Applications Lab (PEDAL) sponsored by International Rectifier and 2) Smart Meter Integration Lab (SMIL).

Applied Research Areas:
Energy and electrical power management; power electronics applications in motor drives, super-capacitors, and power converters; electrical demand management using alternative feedback methods.

Kartik B. Ariyur, Ph.D.
is Assistant Professor in the School of Mechanical Engineering in Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana. Prior to joining Purdue in 2008, worked on a variety of problems while at the Honeywell Labs in Minneapolis. They range from guidance, navigation communications and control to health monitoring, surveillance, hybrid system verification and aerodynamic modeling. He has more than 25 US patent applications (9 issued).
Research Areas:
•Stabilizing the Smart Grid: active demand management; consumer energy management
•Autonomous navigation: GPS denied navigation; navigation with natural signals;
•Health monitoring, adaptation, and real-time optimization: security systems, aircraft engines and actuators
Highlights:
•Program committees of the American Control Conference (2008, 2009), and the Hybrid Systems Computation and Control Conference (2006)
•Technical editor of the International Journal of Adaptive Control and Signal Processing: 2005—present
•SAE best paper award—2004.

•Health monitoring algorithms used on 70% of aircraft auxiliary power units (APUs) worldwide, adaptive filtering algorithms implemented on Qualcomm CDMA chips worldwide, and thresholds for health monitoring of Local Area Augmentation Systems being implemented in various countries.
