Polytechnic Lab for Collaborative Design and Fabrication

3D printers have radically altered the speed and accessibility of fabrication capability for designers of “form.” This multi-disciplinary lab explores next-generation research into the simultaneous design of “form” plus “function.” We develop next-generation additive manufacturing technologies that not only print the shape of an object, but print sensing, computation and actuation embedded throughout the materials. We also engage in the development of meta-materials and “designer polymers” that provide new capabilities coupled with the engineering tools needed to co-design smart products fabricated with these advanced, smart materials.
