Tuesday, December 12, 2017 - 9:45am to 4:00pm
The 4th annual TECHFIT Showcase will be held at the Purdue Co-Rec on Tuesday, December 12, 2017 from 9:45 am to 4:00 pm. TECHFIT participants apply skills in computing, technology, engineering, creativity, teamwork, among others, to innovate their own group-based exergame (a technology-supported fitness game).
In summer 2017, 33 teachers from 16 schools in 7 states completed TECHFIT professional development training to be able to offer a TECHFIT afterschool program(*) or class(+) during school this fall. Fourteen of these teams submitted videos of their progress that included a Scratch animation and demonstration of some part of their exergame innovation. An online video showcase was used to determine the people's choice winner from over 6400 votes cast. A panel of judges evaluated all video submissions to help determine the teams that will be invited to compete in this year's Showcase.
Of this year's seven competing teams, six will be coming from out-of-state to compete at the Showcase. Two industry partners, Phoenix Contact and Balluff, who donate technology used in the toolkits provided to each school for their innovations, will be part of the judging panel at this year's Showcase event. The competing teams at this year's Showcase are:
- Winamac Middle School in Winamac, IN
- Hayward Middle School in Springfield, OH
- Faircrest Memorial Middle School in Canton, OH
- J. O. Strong Middle School in Melvindale, MI
- McMurray Middle School in Nashville, TN
- Freedom Middle School in Franklin, TN
- Charleston Charter Math and Science in Charleston, SC
The Showcase event at Purdue is open to the public. Each team has ten minutes to present their experiences and play a Scratch animation of their exergame, and another ten minutes to demonstrate playing their exergame. The first presentation begins at 10 am in the Co-Rec's Feature Gym. The awards presentation begins at 3:15 pm in the Feature Gym. Come cheer on these middle school innovators and encourage them to continue in studying computing, technology, engineering, STEM.
