Dates: July 18 - August 1, 2021

3 credits: TECH 399

This program is designed to be a global opportunity exclusive to Polytechnic incoming freshmen as well as those that just completed their freshman year. Note this is an exception for 2021 only due to the cancellation of 2020 programs.

This 14-day program will take place entirely in Croatia for summer 2021. Croatia is a country rich in history and largely unknown to the average US college student. It is an EU member country but not part of the Schengen zone travel area, thus allowing entry not tied to Schengen requirements. Croatian history has been one of occupations and diversity in ethnicities and religions. Students will learn about the ancient history of the country while experiencing seaports and Roman and medieval architecture but the bulk of the academic focus will be on the more recent history of Croatia as a participant in the Bosnian wars and related conflicts in the former Yugoslavia. As students’ progress through the Global Competency Certificate and learn about the journey of intercultural competence and dealing with difference, the knowledge that they gain about the ethnic challenges in the areas of former Yugoslavia will provide a sharp contrast of what can happen when differences go terribly wrong. The final emphasis will be placed on the rebound of Croatian society and technology and innovation as they reposition themselves as a modern society open to tourism, renewable energy technology, and as an eager host for tech startup companies and cater to expats.

This 3 credit hour course will utilize the Global Competence Certificate (GCC) curriculum as we work toward increasing the intercultural competence of our Polytechnic student participants.  Student will complete course work that will utilize the GCC online modules as well as focusing on the benefits of intercultural competence in the tech fields that operate in a global setting.
