Dr. John Wensveen is a Professor of Airline Management & Operations at Purdue University and served as the Head of the School of Aviation & Transportation Technology until July 2016. He is an active researcher and expert speaker with a concentration on the airline start-up and restructuring process as well as aviation trends analysis. Additional research activities focus on the development of talent pipelines tied to the needs of the transportation industry (air, road, rail, water, pipeline, space). He is the creator of iPOP™ (Industry-Purdue Opportunity Pipeline), an innovative education, training, and research model providing affordability and accessibility, STEM leadership, world-changing research, and transformative education techniques, while linking aviation higher education with industry partners. Additionally, John has branched out into the cruise line industry focusing on the associated trends, challenges, opportunities, and strategies that are often comparable to the airline industry and is currently working toward the U.S. Coast Guard, Masters Upgrade (100 Gross Ton License) certification.

John is an expert in airline management with the primary focus on business plan development, strategic planning, and the start-up process. John is author of two leading books, ‘Air Transportation: A Management Perspective’ (Routledge Publishing) and ‘Wheels Up: Airline Business Plan Development’ (Krieger Publishing). He frequently appears in the media as an aviation expert.
John is a Certified IATA External Instructor and earned Ph.D. and M.Phil degrees in Air Transport Management / Business from Cardiff University (United Kingdom) and a B.A. in Geography and Transportation Land Use Planning from the University of Victoria (Canada).
Outside of aviation, John is an avid boater, scuba diving enthusiast, and enjoys hitting the open road in the RV.
John and his wife reside in West Lafayette, Indiana and on a sunny little island near Key West, Florida, USA.

CREATOR OF iPOP™(INDUSTRY-PURDUE OPPORTUNITY PIPELINE)
iPOP™ is an innovative education, training, and research model that provides: affordability and accessibility, STEM leadership, world-changing research, and transformative education.
The iPOP™ model is based on industry partnerships with the creation of a branded entity between Aviation Technology and individual partners and their supporting units. Industry partners will include airlines, airports, aircraft manufacturing companies, engine manufacturers, flight training organizations, simulation manufacturing organizations, government agencies, and industry trade associations. Physical and virtual learning environments are created providing education and training to Purdue students and employees at the industry partners via two pipelines (Purdue Student Pipeline and Industry Partner Pipeline).
Purdue Research Park Aerospace District
Participants in the iPOP™ partnership will have access to the emerging 986 acre Purdue Research Park Aerospace District located adjacent to Purdue University Airport. This facility will become an integration of aerospace clusters incorporating industry, government, and academia to facilitate growth and transformation in the aviation and aerospace industries.
Purdue Student Pipeline
In the Purdue Student Pipeline, Aviation Technology students select an academic path from day one (“bundled package” at a fixed price). The pathway includes opportunities for accelerated undergraduate and/or graduate degrees, certifications, embedded experiences with industry (i.e., internships), guaranteed interviews with industry partners, and an increased opportunity for employment with industry partners. The curriculum is based on industry trends, challenges, opportunities, and strategies. Industry partners provide real life scenarios requiring addressing and Aviation Technology faculty, students, and staff provide solutions.
Aviation Technology expects existing programs to grow and new curriculum offerings will be offered through the creation of new undergraduate and graduate programs. Such program offerings will include “traditional” degrees and a diverse range of research-based degrees at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Throughout the academic journey, Aviation Technology students will have multiple opportunities to interface with industry partners. Interaction will take place in the classroom, in the laboratory, at the industry partner’s headquarters, and/or network (local, regional, international). Such interaction will result in multiple opportunities for the students to be mentored by industry professionals as well as provide opportunities for students to mentor employees at the partner locations.
At select points during the academic journey, the Purdue Student Pipeline will intersect with the Industry Partner Pipeline. Aviation Technology students will learn in the same physical and virtual learning environments as employees from the industry partners.
Industry Partner Pipeline
In the Industry Partner Pipeline, select employees at the industry partners will have opportunities to pursue further education and training within their respective divisions, departments, or units. Programs will be instructed by Purdue faculty and/or limited term lecturers in physical and virtual learning environments. Certain industry partner employees meeting Purdue standards and qualifications may be employed as limited term lecturers entering train the trainer programs. The combination of Purdue faculty and industry partner lecturers provides an enhanced learning experience for all participants.
In this pipeline, industry partner employees will have the opportunity to pursue further education and training initiatives on a volunteer basis while others will be mandated by the employer depending on needs of the organization. Such opportunities will include undergraduate degrees, graduate degrees, short-courses, seminars, and certifications customized to the organization’s need.
Industry-sponsored programs will grow and become more diversified in terms of offerings. The scalability of such programs is unrestricted and has global application.
Throughout the education and/or training journey, employees at the industry partners will have multiple opportunities to interface with Purdue Aviation Technology students, faculty, and staff. Interaction will take place in the classroom, in the laboratory, at the partner’s headquarters, and/or network (local, regional, international). Such interaction will result in multiple opportunities for industry professionals to be mentored by students which greatly assists in future planning in terms of corporate culture, productivity, efficiency, employee transition, and employee recruitment.
