Prior to his academic career at Purdue, Melaku spent over 28 years working for airlines and various air transport organizations, like Northwest Airlines/Delta Airlines (Minneapolis), AirTran Airways (now Southwest Airlines, Atlanta), Independence Air (Virginia), Etihad Airways (Abu Dhabi), Elite Jets (Dubai), Ethiopian Airlines (Addis Abeba), UN WFP/UNHAS (Addis Abeba), Embraer (Nashville), Bombardier (West Virginia), and Afrodynamic (Addis Abeba). In his career, Melaku held various roles ranging from Aircraft Technician, Maintenance program Analyst, Air Transport officer, Safety Manger, First Officer, to Consultant/Managing Director.
In addition to his industry experience, Melaku also held academic positions teaching Undergraduate and Graduate level Aviation courses in such positions as Visiting Professor (Abu Dhabi University, Abu Dhabi), Lecturer (Higher Colleges of Technology, Abu Dhabi), Visiting Professor (Southern Illinois University, Illinois), Assistant Professor (Delta State University, Mississippi), and Lecturer (Sinclair Community College, Ohio)
Melaku received his Doctor of Business Administration (D.BA.) in 2013 from Argosy University, specializing in International Business. MSc from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Aviation Safety, and in Aviation Management. BSc from Addis Abeba University in Physics.
Melaku also holds FAA Commercial Pilot’s license, with multi-engine and Instrument ratings; FAA Airframe and Powerplant Aircraft Technician License; FCC General Radio Operator’s License; and FAA Ground Instructor’s license with Advanced Instrument ratings.
