The primary delivery method for a course should not be an instructor lecturing in front of the classroom. Instead, state-of-the-art teaching methods in which students are at the center of the learning environment are employed across years of study. Methods include active learning and others that have been proven to bring deeper learning.

Working in an active learning laboratory, student teams each designed and built a "garden in a box" for consumers who live in urban food deserts, areas where healthy food choices are more difficult to find. Students were challenged to pick projects which required them to learn new concepts and skills.
Significant progress has been made in the last two years in increasing the number of courses being delivered via active-learning instructional techniques and in the percentage of faculty who have completed IMPACT training through the university’s Center for Instructional Excellence.
