Our project involved testing seals used in the fluid power industry. Specifically, we were testing different types of static seals. Static seals, as the name implies, seal against fluid pressure in a stationary environment. Our project involved testing these seals at various pressures and various temperatures. The overall goal of our testing was to record the number of pressure cycles that each seal type could withstand without leaking. Afterwards, the physical damage done to the seals by the pressure and temperature would be analyzed.
Our team was the third team to work on this project. We inherited a test bench that included all of the necessary hardware to run our experiments (motor, hydraulic pump, hoses, manifolds, control valves, and computer with the necessary hardware and software). We used custom testing housings provided by our client company, Black Hawk Seals. BHS also provided the various static seals, including multiple types of head seals and O-rings / backup seals.
