Team 6 Walqer Cane

This project is sponsored by:

Knee osteoarthritis is relatively common among the older generation. A big issue with osteoarthritis is the knee adduction moment, causing deflection in the knee. Waler LLC hopes to improve the living situation of people suffering from osteoarthritis with their walking cane. However, fall risk is a big factor when understanding canes and walkers. Too heavy of a cane can discourage use if the patient is weaker than usual. Falling is a huge liability and can even lead to death in older, more fragile patients. The targeted users are mostly knee joint aging patients and those in rehabilitation for walking. These people are used to limited knee mobility and knee pains due to arthritis or osteoporosis. Some benefits that the target audience will have from this product are assistance during rehab, less stress on the knee of the patient, and general improvement in quality of life. Our goal is to assist Walqer LLC with improving aspects of their cane design, which is specific to assist in walking and knee pain. The overall mechanical characteristics of the cane, the shape, and the material of the sole are our main focus.

Problem Statement

Our goal is to design/create a rehabilitative walking cane that targets the knee adduction moment in order to test how much we can alleviate the stresses of walking that can develop into knee osteoarthritis later in life.
