National conferences like SIGGRAPH provide a platform for students to immerse themselves in the latest innovations and breakthroughs in their respective fields. From cutting-edge graphics and animation techniques to the forefront of game development technology, exposure to such a concentrated dose of creativity can spark fresh ideas and perspectives. These conferences boast keynote speakers and workshop leaders who are luminaries in their fields. Attending talks by industry leaders allows students to learn from the very best, gaining insights into the challenges, triumphs, and strategies that have shaped their careers. The wealth of knowledge shared in these sessions is a goldmine for any aspiring professional.
One of the most significant advantages of attending national conferences is the chance to network with professionals, educators, and fellow students. Building connections in the industry can open doors to internships, mentorships, and collaborations. Many successful careers have been launched through the connections made at conferences like SIGGRAPH, WIA World Summit, and GDC.
CGT’s Graduate Student and TA, Sid Bal, has been a volunteer at SIGGRAPH for the last four years from 2019-2023. He notes that organizations like WIA, SIGGRAPH, ColorStack may offer scholarships for attending national conferences, so being a registered member of a national group is extremely beneficial. Each conference has been an experience of a lifetime where major companies unveiled groundbreaking projects and technical paper presentations that altered the industry. These conferences provided a unique vantage point into the ever-evolving job market, with senior-level SIGGRAPH participants offering glimpses into the pulse of the animation industry.
At this most recent conference (2023), Sid was able to meet and chat with several industry reps from Naughty Dog, Pixar, Weta FX, and many more! They each shared different advice, but all noted the realities of projects and internships are in flux, with opportunities migrating to Vancouver and Montreal. Despite the challenges, including the recent writer's strike affecting the animation sector and subsequent layoffs, there was optimism in the air. Amidst a competitive applicant pool, advice echoes: don't limit your application focus to the U.S. International opportunities beckon, with Australia and Europe emerging as hotspots for animation careers.
Sid had the opportunity to run into a lighting artist at Pixar, Markus Kranzler, who provided pointers on his portfolio after many encounters throughout the weekend! A takeaway from this feedback, Sid shared for students who are preparing for industry, “Your portfolio doesn’t need to be perfect; it needs to showcase what you’re good at. Take the time and try new things, and keep practicing your craft!”
Another notable network connection made by Sid was Candace Walker, a Naughty Dog recruiting manager. By simply helping her to her table! In this short encounter, Sid was able to build a connection and she remembered him later in the day to give him a coveted pin; emphasizing the collaborative spirit within the industry.
Networking at SIGGRAPH is a potent force. Insights from professionals like Joanna Davison, the head lighting artist at Weta FX, offered a glimpse into the industry's journey, emphasizing the significance of storytelling through lighting. Understanding the intricacies of reel submissions and the breakdown of shots illuminated her path to success.
Students who are eager to get their work in front of industry leaders need to consider attending conferences like SIGGRAPH. These events are a platform for learning, networking, and growth. As the animation industry faces staffing challenges, the resilience, camaraderie, and passion witnessed at SIGGRAPH will reignite anyone’s hope for the future. This journey has not only enriched Sid’s understanding of the animation world but has also instilled a sense of excitement for the boundless opportunities that lie ahead for his career.
