Miller named 2011 computer & information technology distinguished alumnus

Nicholas Miller, IT Project Manager, Eli Lilly and Company

  • BS ’86, Purdue University
  • MPM ‘98, ITT Technical Institute

Nicholas Miller was initially interested in electronics and chose computer technology as a major at Purdue. He quickly learned that the program was more focused on people than technology and loved that he could help people with their use of technology. He has taken that same focus and applied it to his career. Miller has spent nearly 25 years at Eli Lilly and Company, where he has held a number of positions: systems analyst; manager of the clinical research information systems; and IT program manager positions focusing on clinical research, Y2K, the global business integration program and Lilly Research Laboratories. Miller feels it is important to work with project teams to get clarity on goals and objectives, something he learned during his years at Purdue. As a result, his teams are more efficient. While at Purdue, he remembers Lonnie Bentley as a professor who taught him a lot about the importance of asking the right questions to get the information needed to define and design systems. Miller has been honored with several awards for outstanding performance in his field. He received the President’s Award from Lilly Research Laboratories in 1997, and Systems Achievement Awards from Eli Lilly’s Information Technology division in 1989 and 2009. In his spare time, he enjoys biking, staying involved in his children’s activities and mentoring others in their careers. Miller and his wife, Laura, live in Carmel, Ind., with their three children.
