Purdue College of Technology South Bend is proving that the key to engaging more students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) is through direct activities, such as its electric go-kart summer camp and high school class demonstrations.

Austin Mann, for example, participated in the electric go-kart summer camp for a second consecutive year this summer. Before attending the camp in 2013, he did not have many educational goals beyond high school. Since participating, however, his outlook has changed.

”My goal is to attend Purdue College of Technology South Bend and get a degree in electrical engineering technology,” he said. “The camp got me interested in electrical engineering technology because it was more of a hands-on experience rather than people just telling me about it.”
