The use of a cane helps many individuals achieve “a more natural reciprocal gait pattern with the opposite arm and leg moving together and provide an increased base of support” (Elsevier, 2023). Along with that “single-tip canes have also been found to relieve the pain of osteoarthritis” (Elsevier, 2023). What Walqer plans to do with their specific cane is to address the knee adduction moment (KAM), so the user will have a more stable gait and pain-free walking motion. To do this, sensors plan to be added to measure operational and biomechanical responses from the cane, such as 20% body weight, heart rate, and the knee adduction moment of the user. With this technology added into the cane, a more biomechanically friendly cane will be created to allow users to have a more stable gait and pain-free walk.
