What made you decide to choose your specific major?
I was drawn to UX because of its interdisciplinary nature. It allows me to combine my interests in technology, design, and human behavior. I also love the creativity and problem solving UX requires. I was drawn to Purdue’s program because of the experience studios, where I have the opportunity to work on real world projects.
What are a couple of your favorite things about your program of study?
I love that we get to work on real projects for real companies, even in the first year of the program. It’s a great way to learn about the industry and work with professionals while still being in a learning environment. It’s easily the best and fastest way to learn about design, and allows me to actually apply the skills I learn in class.
What has been one of your favorite class projects?
My favorite class project was redesigning an interactive for the Indianapolis Children’s Museum. I have always been interested in working on products at the intersection of digital and physical elements, so this project was perfect for me. Since it was part of an experience studio, I worked with a supportive group of upperclassmen and professionals in the industry through every step of the process.
What other activities are you involved in on campus?
For academic clubs, I’m involved with UX Design club, Women in Technology, and WiTty sisters. Outside of the Polytechnic Institute, I am part of Purdue Bands, participating in both the concert and athletic bands. In my free time, I enjoy going to the CoRec.
What do you know about your program of study now that you wish someone had told you when you were choosing a major?
Don’t be afraid to reach out to upperclassmen or professors and take advantage of mentorship opportunities. They can provide a lot of useful information about the fields you’re interested in. Additionally, having connections with these people can lead to opportunities you wouldn’t get otherwise.
What would be one piece of advice for prospective students or new Purdue students?
Talk to the people sitting next to you in class. Chances are that they want to make friends here just as much as you do. Although it can be scary, ask them to grab a meal after class! It’s a great way to get to know people outside of the classroom and doesn’t require any planning.
