Mechanical Engineering Technology (SOET)

What made you decide to choose your specific major?

I chose Mechanical Engineering Technology as my major, incorporating all the topics I wanted to learn through Mechanical Engineering in the engineering school, but I was also able to apply more of the topics learned in lectures to lab activities that simulate real-world experiences.

What are a couple of your favorite things about your program of study?

One of my favorite things about Mechanical Engineering Technology is the passion that the teachers have for working in industry and wanting to share their knowledge and experiences with the students. Another one of my favorite things about Mechancial Engineering Technology is the number of projects that I get to work on. These projects allow me to fun products but also show the calculations of how they work.

What has been one of your favorite class projects?

My favorite class project so far in Mechancial Engineering Technology is the catapult that I made in MET 213, Dynamics. My team and I were tasked with creating a catapult and calculating the efficiency based on the launch of the catapult as well as theoretical calculations of how fast it can release the projectile.

What other activities are you involved in on campus?

Other activities that I am a part of on campus are being a member of MTA (Minority Technology Association, PUIOA (Purdue University Intramural Officials Association), my fraternity house, and Head Supervisor of Intramural Sports.

What do you know about your program of study now that you wish someone had told you when you were choosing a major?

One thing that I know about Mechanical Engineering Technology that I wish someone had told me earlier is how much the topics I learned in class can overlap with my life outside of classes. I have been able to take what I have learned in lectures and labs and apply it to everyday activities and projects that I come across.

What would be one piece of advice for prospective students or new Purdue students?

One piece of advice that I have for prospective students and new Purdue students is to focus and learn from those early classes. A lot of the higher-level classes build upon the skills learned in the beginning classes and having to reteach yourself a certain calculation or program takes time away from what you could have been learning in the class.
