Ben Ackerman

Cybersecurity and Network Engineering Technology (CIT)

What made you decide to choose your specific major?

I did a lot of STEM classes in high school, but always had a knack for computer systems, particularly finding new and unexpected ways to use them.

What are a couple of your favorite things about your program of study?

The labs are very hands on and provides experience that sounds really good during interviews.

What has been one of your favorite class projects?

I created Windows malware for my CNIT 315 final project.

What other activities are you involved in on campus?

CERIAS, Student Government, Ethical Hackers Club, and Purdue IT Professionals.

What do you know about your program of study now that you wish someone had told you when you were choosing a major?

Do personal projects in your free time. Take time on your own to study what you are interested in. Classes introduce you to the topics, but it's up to you to find what you want to dedicate yourself to.

What would be one piece of advice for prospective students or new Purdue students?

Always try to put yourself out there. Introduce yourself to people. Go to events. These are the connections that will help you discover opportunities.
