What made you decide to choose your specific major?
From a young age I knew that I was always going to choose a path that allowed me to not only show off my technical side, but also my creativity. I was inspired heavily by Studio Ghibli and Nintendo growing up, and it has been a lifelong dream of mine to create stories that I can show through animation. When I discovered the Animation and Visual Effects major at Purdue, I was over the moon! I knew that Purdue would teach me all the elements of being a professional who not only can create incredible motion graphics and design, but would also know the ins and outs of the programs that were industry standard.
What are a couple of your favorite things about your program of study?
The class sizes in my program are smaller, allowing professors to give individual attention to students who are looking for more assistance. I love that I am able to get to know my professors on a more personal level as well, as it truly feels like I’m a part of one big family within the program. The professors have a lot of experience in their field too, giving unique insight that a student would normally never get outside of the classroom. I have learned a lot from them, and because of my professors I feel like I have grown not only as a student, but also as a person.
What has been one of your favorite class projects?
That’s a hard one! I have a lot of love for each of my class projects due to the amount of creative freedom that students are allowed when it comes to each class project. As of today, my favorite project has to be my little bug! From scratch I was able to design a cute little alien bug that I was later asked to model in ZBrush. I researched scarab beetles and learned how to accurately model a realistic depiction of their anatomy, as well as add my own creative flair to make it look like it was from an alien planet. It was so cool and I definitely need to 3D print the little guy someday.
What other activities are you involved in on campus?
I’m currently involved with the Themed Entertainment and Attraction club, and I’m also looking to join my program for global study opportunities. These opportunities include visiting countries like Japan, Germany, France, and there are even more places being added in the future.
What do you know about your program of study now that you wish someone had told you when you were choosing a major?
Just how many options I have when it comes to the types of jobs that I can apply my skills to after college! 3D modeling and animation are found in plenty of places outside of movies and tv shows, such as in marketing, in sports, in web design, and so much more! I was able to take a sports graphics course one summer, and it truly opened my eyes to how widespread animation was in our day to day lives.
What would be one piece of advice for prospective students or new Purdue students?
Learn how to curb procrastination. Deadlines in the animation industry (or any creative industry) are important. Being able to discipline yourself early and prioritize tasks will benefit you tremendously not only in college, but also in your professional career. It also prevents stress and helps you build confidence in both your projects and yourself! If you feel like you’re falling behind, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Everyone here is rooting for you!
