When opportunity knocks, I answer the door every time. It’s led me places I didn’t imagine were possible. I have a long history of biting off just a little more than I can chew, and then I figure out how to make it work.

BS ’99, Computer Graphics Technology

“I acquired valuable technical skills at Purdue,” says Jennifer Rider, president and CEO of Lafayette Instrument Company, “After graduation, I interviewed with a multitude of companies and decided to work for a day-trading firm in Austin, Texas. Working with the latest technologies at Purdue meant I was immediately able to contribute in my new position.”

While studying computer graphics technology, Rider earned a minor in organizational leadership. “It prepared me to take on management responsibilities only two years into my fledgling career. Organization, communication, and problem-solving skills set me apart from others. I spent an exhilarating 12 years at Charles Schwab.”

Now, as CEO of Lafayette Instrument Company, Rider manages development of the company’s flagship software, oversees marketing campaigns for three product lines, and travels worldwide to promote their products and develop new business relationships, among many other duties.

“I give Purdue and incredible mentors like Jamie Mohler (professor of computer graphics technology) credit for preparing me,” Rider says. “Prof. Mohler gave me enough guidance so that I didn’t fail but not so much that I didn’t learn from the experience. I am fortunate to have been surrounded by great people who taught me much and supported me often.”

Rider lives in West Lafayette, Indiana, with her husband, Steve, and their two boys, Brice and Dylan.
