Building Information Modeling (CMT)

What made you decide to choose your specific major?

I chose Building Information Modeling because as I was growing up, I always loved buildings and homes. Building Information Modeling allows me to design the buildings and homes that I have always admired and make them my own through creativity and design elements. I also loved the design freedom that Building Information Modeling provided me.

What are a couple of your favorite things about your program of study?

I like how the classes are structured within the Building Information Modeling program. The BIM classes are hybrid, which is where you have a lecture in the beginning of class where you learn the new content, and is then followed by a lab portion where you are then able to apply that new content. I love this structure because I am a hands-on learner and being able to apply the new content I learn immediately after is very beneficial for me. I also love the atmosphere that the professors within the CGT Department bring to our courses. They are always so helpful and I have never felt more at home than within the CGT Department.

What has been one of your favorite class projects?

One of my favorite class projects was building the Boiler Crib in CM 150. Since I am minoring in Construction Management, I have been able to take various Construction Management courses within my four years here at Purdue. CM 150 is a course where you are able to build a small building, the Boiler Crib, throughout the entire semester. Completing each step of building the Boiler Crib left me feeling very accomplished at the end of the semester and I left with a set of valuable skills.

What other activities are you involved in on campus?

On campus, I am involved in the Women in Construction Management club. Within this club, we have been able to visit various construction job sites, attend the Chicago Build Expo, and host various networking events.

What do you know about your program of study now that you wish someone had told you when you were choosing a major?

One thing that I wish I knew about my program of study is that you won’t immediately get into your major-specific courses until after your first year. You will be taking some other CGT courses that don’t exactly align with your major at first. But, this is very common within the first year of many majors here at Purdue.

What would be one piece of advice for prospective students or new Purdue students?

My biggest piece of advice for new students is to get involved on campus. Whether it be in a club that is related to your major/career or a club that fits your interests, you will be able to meet so many new people and you will find that there will be even more new opportunities provided to you.
