Polytechnic faculty, staff lean in and help others

I’ve learned many things about the Polytechnic, Purdue, and our community since stepping into the role of interim dean. A strong theme that has emerged is a willingness to lean in and help others; COVID-19 has shone an especially bright light on this value. I’m proud of our community (in the broadest sense of the word) and proud to be a member of it. This is also the time of year when the needs of others garner much deserved attention. The holidays put a special emphasis on giving and selflessness. Our own personal needs and ability to give ebb and flow with life. When we are in need, it’s good to know there are family, friends and community organizations that can help, like the United Way of Greater Lafayette.

Each year Purdue partners with the United Way of Greater Lafayette to raise money to support their “Cradle to Career Commitment.” United Way fights for the health, education and financial stability of every person in every community. In Greater Lafayette, that means equipping people with tools necessary to live their best life possible from cradle to career. This commitment helps people develop the necessary skills for a lifetime of good decision making. Programs like the Kindergarten Countdown Camp and Read to Success help prepare the youngest members of our community to be successful in school. The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program provides free tax preparation and filing assistance to thousands of people. The United Way partners with other community organizations like the YMCA, LARA, and Food Finders Food Bank to increase their impact.

As we enter this season of giving, I invite you to join me in donating to the United Way of Greater Lafayette. This year’s campaign ends on November 16, and the Polytechnic is only halfway to meeting our goal of $15,000. Thank you to those that have already contributed! If you haven’t made your pledge yet, go to purdue.edu/unitedway. It’s easy and quick to complete; every donation, no matter the size, makes a big difference.
