One year into his new job as a Purdue lab manager, Matt Hamilton (BS organizational leadership and supervision ’08) had “a good understanding for how the job was going to run.” After an initial focus on his primary responsibilities, including oversight of seven labs, maintenance of equipment and supervision of lab personnel, Hamilton was looking forward to pursuing his own research.
Then came COVID-19.
Hamilton, fisheries and aquatics laboratory manager in Purdue’s Department of Forestry and Natural Resources since 2019, adapted. Working with colleagues, he created emergency safety procedures and ramped down research projects.
“Every day is different,” said Hamilton. “Every day can be a challenge. Our labs are very diverse, so we have very different problems to solve on a daily basis.”
