Prior to being selected to attend the Women in Aviation International Conference in Orlando, Florida in March, I wrote these words in my application: “I have always wanted to attend the WAI Conference. I had the opportunity to go last year, however, I was unable to due to a scholarship reception. Looking back, I feel rather lucky because now I can attend with a group of young women that not only share the same passion as me, but that have also become some of my greatest friends and mentors at Purdue. Attending the WAI conference is not only a great opportunity to make connections and meet new people, but also to further bond with the great women – and men – who I have met this year already.”
Little did I know how these words would ring true.
As I walked in the overwhelming hall in Orlando, Florida, for the first time on March 2, 2017, I saw rows and rows of companies I have dreamt about working for since I can remember. To be exact, according to the Women in Aviation International website, 4,500 people were in attendance and 165 different companies were represented. I never imagined the sheer volume of what I was standing amongst. Purdue is one of the 165 organizations represented at the conference, which means we are not only recruiting future students, but also keeping alumni aware of what is happening at Purdue.
After working my shift at the booth, I ventured out to speak with various representatives of my favorite companies to both gather information and make important connections. I was lucky enough to gain valuable face time – and even a mentor as a freshman. In addition to an exhibit hall, there are also study and information sessions such as “Networking for Students” and “Flying Moms” that many of our members found valuable. Some even received scholarships that were presented at the conference. This year, WAI awarded $634,273 in scholarships.
The conference an invaluable learning experience, full not only of new connections but also new friendships. We even had time to make a quick trip to Disney World after a long day of networking. I could never imagine how a short trip could bring me so close to my fellow peers. I am forever grateful that I was provided this opportunity. I will be attending the conference every year, strengthening old connections and friendships, as well as creating new ones.
