Minorities in the Polytechnic – the Students’ View

Diverse students from various majors in the Polytechnic came together to discuss what it means to be a student in and out of the classroom. The panelists shared their experiences with transitions to Purdue and the Polytechnic and talked about resources and opportunities available to get the most from your college experience — including the Minority Technology Association (MTA), which is dedicated to excellence in academic, personal and professional growth. Our student panelists included Emmani Ellis (mechatronics engineering technology), Joshua Garcia (aviation management), Lindsay Harper (computer and information technology), and Lauren McDaniel (animation). Alumnus Mel’Dre King (BS’16, industrial engineering technology), manager of global supply planning at Target Corporation, shared his unique perspective as a graduate of our college. Anthony Sparkling, assistant professor of construction management technology, joined us. Cathy Pullings, the Polytechnic’s recruitment and diversity coordinator, moderated the discussion, and Toni Munguia, director of recruitment, retention and diversity, helped answer questions. Gary Bertoline, dean of Purdue Polytechnic, welcomed new students to Purdue and our college. Nathan Mentzer, one of the TECH 120 course's professors, discussed maintaining good classroom etiquette and integrity. We discussed what the Polytechnic is doing to prioritize your health and safety during in-person classes and lab sessions. Professors talked about being active this year in multiple learning environments (discussion-based, project-based, labs, lectures, etc.) Academic advisors discussed staying connected and getting support when you need it. We also talked about how to get involved and have fun as Polytechnic students.
Protect Purdue & Academic Adjustments for Fall 2020

In this important edition of our Live Q&A for Fall 2020’s new and returning students, we discussed changes to life as a student starting this August due to the pandemic. Gary Bertoline, dean of Purdue Polytechnic, and Pat Connolly, associate dean of undergraduate programs, discussed the overall adjustments that Purdue and the Polytechnic are making to prioritize the safety of the campus community. You’ll hear about Purdue’s up-to-date good-health practices (requirements for face masks, seasonal flu shots and social distancing) and the Protect Purdue Pledge. Four professors serving on the Polytechnic’s “dream team” of exceptional teachers also joined us. Sarah Leach discussed how instructors will use technology to deliver course content in different ways. April Cheung discussed how teaching and learning in the Polytechnic can be top notch, whether in classrooms and labs, online, or a hybrid format. Alejandra Magana talked about how professors will use best teaching practices while ensuring social distancing. She also discussed how you, as students, can stay connected with professors and your peers as you engage in teamwork. Abrar Hammoud talked about how the Polytechnic is surveying students and professors about how to best help with everyone’s all-around needs.
