Program Description

The International Construction Management in Ireland program brings Purdue University students face-to-face with Irish constructors, engineers, educators, and students and exposes them to the methods/systems utilized by the construction industry of Ireland. Study Abroad students attend lectures on the Irish construction industry given by faculty members of the Technological University Dublin (TUD) and the National University of Ireland-Galway. The knowledge obtained in these lectures is supplemented with visits to new construction and historic renovation sites and historical buildings/structures in the cities of Dublin, Cork, Limerick, and Galway. Cultural visits include the Guinness Brewery, GPO (site of the Irish Easter Uprising), Christ Church Cathedral, kissing the Blarney Stone, Cliffs of Moher, Cobh Heritage Museum, and the Aran Islands.

Objectives for the course include:

  • Gain a deeper understanding of Irish history, culture, and society. Students will learn about the rich history of Ireland, from its Celtic roots to its role in the modern world. They will also explore the country's diverse culture, which is influenced by its Celtic, English, and Viking heritage.
  • Learn about the different types of construction materials and methods used in Ireland. Students will see firsthand the different materials and techniques that are used to build structures in Ireland, from traditional materials like stone and timber to more modern materials like concrete and steel.
  • Observe the safety procedures and regulations that are in place on Irish construction sites. Students will learn about the importance of safety on Irish construction sites and see how safety procedures are implemented.
  • Develop cross-cultural competence and an appreciation for cultural differences. Students will have the opportunity to interact with Irish people from all walks of life, and they will learn to appreciate the different cultural norms and values of Ireland. This will help them to become more understanding and adaptable in their interactions with people from other cultures.
  • Improve their language skills. Students will have the opportunity to speak with Irish citizens. All students are tasked to learn a bit of Irish Gaelic each day.
