Ph.D. candidate Israa Azzam, under the mentorship of Farid Breidi from the School of Engineering Technology at Purdue Polytechnic, has been awarded the Best Poster Award at the 2024 Industrial Engineering and Operations Management (IEOM) World Congress held at Lawrence Technological University in Detroit, Michigan.
Azzam's dissertation, titled "Transforming Industrial Teleoperation through Immersive Digital Twins (DTs): A Collaborative Extended Reality (XR) Environment for Remote Operations," was recognized for its innovation and potential impact on the future of industrial operations. Her research focuses on advancing industrial remote teleoperation by leveraging immersive extended reality technologies to create collaborative environments for remote operations.
Azzam was also granted the National Science Foundation’s Travel Support Award to attend the conference. The IEOM World Congress provided Azzam a platform to present research, connect with industry experts, and engage with peers in industrial engineering and operations management.
The 2024 event also featured a tour of the River Rouge-based Ford manufacturing facility, where Azzam had a firsthand look at emerging technologies in the industrial engineering space.
"This experience has been an invaluable part of my academic journey," Azzam reflected. Looking ahead to completing her Ph.D., she aspires to continue her academic career as an assistant professor, contributing to the advancement of XR applications in industrial engineering operations. She is passionate about leveraging her experience to mentor and guide the next generation of scholars.
