Dimitrios Ziakkas
SIML 105
Dimitrios Ziakkas is an Assistant Professor in the School of Aviation and Transportation Technology at Purdue University. He is an Airbus captain, instructor and examiner with current A-320, A-330/350, A-340 type ratings. A cross-cultural communicator, global citizen, and innovator, Dimitrios has over 30 years of experience in military and civil aviation operations worldwide, integrating manpower planning – selection and recruitment aviation practices in multi-disciplinary research programs. His professional background is diverse, from history and the humanities to engineering and science, concerned not only with the history of aviation technological devices and processes but also with technology in history (the relationship of aviation technology to politics, economics, science, the arts, and the organization of production) and with the role it plays in the differentiation of individuals in society.
Dimitrios retired from Hellenic Air Force in 2008 and worked as a commercial pilot in private jets, Olympic Air, Qatar Airways, and Legend Airlines. As a pilot, instructor and examiner, he has a 11500 total flying hours experience with aircraft types such as McDonnell Douglas F-4E Phantom II, Lockheed C-130 H/B Hercules, Gulfstream G-V, Premier 1/A (RA-390), Airbus A-320, A-330, A-340, A-380.
During his service with Hellenic Air Force, he was an electronic war officer and also a flight safety investigator officer for ten years. With Olympic Air was head of the ICAO level 4-language project. In Qatar Airways participated in training and organized manpower planning, recruitment and selection process. He was Head of Training in Flight Training Organizations / Type Rate Training Organizations, Flight Instructor, Type Rate Instructor, Examiner, Crew Resource Management Instructor in Greece and U.A.E under JAR / EASA organizations. He has also taught courses in the History, Technology, and Doctrine Program in Hellenic Air Force Academy.
He earned a B.S in Aviation Science in 1994 from Hellenic Air Force Academy, Athens Greece, and a B.S in Economics from National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Athens (NKUA), Greece in 2003. Additionally, he earned an M.S in History and Philosophy of Science and Technology, (NKUA), Greece in 2006. He holds a Ph.D. at the Graduate Program in the History and Philosophy of Science and Technology, (NKUA), Greece (2014). Furthermore, he holds an M.S in Human Factors in Aviation from Coventry University, UK, (2016), an MBA from Birmingham University, UK (2019), and an MS in Human Resources Management and Development from Salford University, UK (2019).
He is a member of the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), the European Association for Aviation Psychology (EAAP), the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES), the Society for the History of Technology (SHOT) and a Fellow member of the Royal Aeronautical Society, U.K.
His research is focused on the adoption of technology in the aviation operations area, flight safety and training, online flight training, single pilot operations and economical approach of the software and hardware localization in the formation of the aviation - military projects. He works on a project in the appropriation of aviation electronics and related technologies in single pilot operation - AI (VR-AR-MR-SATCE) simulation and formation of certification - training requirements of Advanced Air Mobility. Also he is interested in the competition between Europe and the USA in the aviation industry in and after the cold war period worldwide.
