2015 VisREU Student Presents Summer Research at REU Symposium at NSF

Caroline Zhang2015 VisREU Student, Caroline Zhang, was selected to participate in the Council on Undergraduate Research's Research Experiences for Undergraduates Symposium. The symposium took place on October 25-26, 2015 at The National Science Foundation in Arlington, VA. Caroline worked with Dr. Andrew Mount (research mentor)  and Dr. Vera Chan (post-doc fellow) of the Biological Sciences Department at Clemson University. Caroline's project focused on the visualization of barnacle and oyster confocal data on a cellular and molecular level to study chitin production in barnacle larvae (also known as barnacle cyprids) and shell mineralization in oyster hemocytes. Visualizations were created using Imaris software. Caroline attends Emory University where she was a rising sophomore at the time of her participation in the VisREU Program at Clemson. Visualization Mentor: Vetria Byrd.

In her own words . . . .

"I am very thankful for my VisREU experience. The program was able to teach me so much about what conducting research is like, with all its odd hours and freedom of exploration. I met incredible mentors who were so nice and gave me a lot of support and guidance. Presenting at XSEDE '15 was amazing. The hotel was very fancy and luxurious, but the conference itself was well planned and I learned a lot about supercomputing from the workshops and talks that were given. Then, presenting my poster in a real poster session was one of my favorite memories of that trip. People really wanted to hear what I had spent 8 weeks working on, and I was happy to say that they all walked away with a new understanding of visualizations and barnacles. Presenting at the NSF for the CUR Undergraduate Research Symposium was amazing too, even though it was a very short conference. I was surrounded by people who all had similar experiences to me, and it was great getting to know them and learning about their research projects and listening to their career aspirations. I met some really passionate faculty members that gave me some advice on applying for graduate school and a few fields to look into. Presenting inside the NSF atrium was the highlight of that trip. It was awesome to have both my peers and mentors come around and listen to my research. I also had the chance to walk around and look at other people's posters, and it was so cool to see the diverse fields that everyone was involved with." ~ Caroline Zhang

VisREU Students Participate in REUNS - 2015 - Second National Workshop for REU Research in Networking and Systems (REUNS 2015), Dallas, TX, October 2015.

VisREU Students, Shayne O'Brien from SUNY Geneseo and Claudia Salazar (Winthrop University) pictured below on the left and right, respectively, submitted their final VisREU papers to REUNS 2015 - Second National Workshop for REU Research in Networking and Systems (REUNS 2015) for consideration. Both papers were accepted for presentations. The goal of the workshop is to provide a venue for students to publishe their research done as part of the REU program. The workshop seeks original submissions in research areas that are currently funded by the NSF's Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE).

2014 VisREU Student Presents Summer Research at REU Symposium at NSF

Michael Bosch, 2014 VisREU Student, was selected to participate in the Council on Undergraduate Research's Research Experiences for Undergraduates Michael BoschSymposium. The symposium took place on October 26-27, 2015 at The National Science Foundation in Arlington, VA. Michael worked with Drs. Stephen Moysey (Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences), Catherine Mobley (College of Business and Behavrioal Science) and Matthew Boyer (School of Education) on, "Expressing Sustainability within the Web-Based Multiplayer Game Naranpur Online." Michael developed and visualized a system of metrics and indicators that measure sustainability of a region within the web-based game. Seven metrics, each containing several indicators, were developed and used to determine the relative sustainable development of both the entire world of Naranpus and the individual player's farming property. Michael reports, "Being able to visualize sustainability development within Naranpur will facilitate a player's understanding of the concept of sustainability and how they themselves contribute to a more global sustainable development. Michael is a student at the University of South Dakota. Visualization Mentor: Vetria Byrd.

VisREU Student Presenting Summer Research at 2014 NABG Meeting

AsherSampongSummer VisREU Student, Asher Sampong (Fort Valley State University), were among other student researchers presenting results from their summer research experiences. Asher's summer work included visualizing multiple layers of high dimensional biological data. Asher worked with Drs. Melissa Smith (Electrical and Computer Engineering) and Joshua Levine (Visual Computing), research and visualization mentors, respectively at Clemson. Asher presented his research results at the National Association of Black Geoscientists, in Richland, WA, September 17-20, 2015.
