Purdue Polytechnic professor in Computer and Information Technology Umit Karabiyik has secured a new round of funding from the U.S. Department of Justice to continue his work with Internet-of-Things-based crime scene investigation.

Building on three years of previous success, this highly competitive award—one of only four granted nationwide—provides $439,987 to develop innovative tools and training for law enforcement.

The project, “Crime Scene Surveying for IoT Investigations: National Training and Technical Assistance Program,” focuses on developing a user-friendly smartphone app for scanning crime scenes to detect IoT devices and associated data, as well as providing comprehensive training for criminal justice professionals.

This collaboration with the National White Collar Crime Center (NW3C) will offer in-person and online resources for over 130,000 U.S. criminal justice practitioners, enhancing their skills in preserving and utilizing digital evidence from IoT devices.
