Andrew Stull is an Assistant Project Scientist in the Department of Psychological & Brain Sciences at the University of California, Santa Barbara where he collaborates with Professors Mary Hegarty and Richard E. Mayer. His previous work includes designing biotelemetry systems for monitoring the behavior of free-roaming marine animals, teaching biology at the high school and community college levels, and developing and producing digital media for the textbook publishing industry. His research interests encompass multimedia design, diagrammatic reasoning, and the design and integration of instructional technology for learning in authentic settings. One branch of his research investigates the cognitive and perceptual factors that contribute to learning and spatial reasoning with tangible learning aids, 3-D models. At a fundamental level, his research investigates the interplay between external representations, such as diagrams, animations, 3-D models, or virtual objects, and internal representations, which one might form, store, and retrieve from the mind. He is a 2010 National Academy of Sciences/Spencer Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow and is the PI or co-PI on several grants from the Spencer Foundation and the National Science Foundation to support his research.
