This is the fifth year for the School of Engineering Technology, after merging Electrical and Computer Engineering Technology with Mechanical Engineering Technology. We are a true combination of faculty and staff dedicated to the success of our current students and our many alumni.
The integration of the two departments continues to be guided by our Industry Advisory Councils. Their consistent message is this: ensure our programs emulate the current job market partnership between electrical and mechanical engineers while exploring more interdisciplinary options. New programs in fields such as robotics, mechatronics and energy help our students stand out even more for entry into the workforce, and the mix of disciplines continues to be a strong focus in our Manufacturing Engineering Technology program.
The Purdue Polytechnic Institute is focused on the transformation of the undergraduate student learning experience. What, where, and how we teach are being scrutinized to empower student learning. One of the ten elements of the transformation is integrated learning-in-context curriculum. We know that students learn and retain more when they have a deep understanding of the context or purpose of learning. To facilitate this type of learning, we are creating lab-based experiences that blend material between courses during a semester (horizontal integration) and from year-to-year (vertical integration). We are incorporating horizontal and vertical integration around three thematic areas: energy systems, autonomous electric vehicles, and a connected factory. Learning outcomes tied to practical experiences continue to be a hallmark of our engineering technology education.
It is an exciting time for the faculty, staff, students, and alumni of the School of Engineering Technology. While the pace is quick, the rapid change is bringing a sense of vibrancy and energy to us all. It is a great time to be in the college. We encourage you to stay in touch and engaged.
