College Update

Manufacturing curriculum

Manufacturing is making a comeback in the U.S. thanks in part to the re-shoring of jobs as well as a slowly healing economy.  It is critically important that this nation have a strong manufacturing-based economy if for no other reason than for national security reasons. For example, many computer parts and electronic devices are manufactured in Asia and Europe and no longer in the US.

Transformation of the College of Technology

On December 7, 2012, I presented to the faculty and staff my recommendations for transforming the college. To paraphrase from my proposal:

The College of Technology is at a critical moment in its history as the original reason for its formation is no longer the primary reason for its continued existence and relevance. Technology today is very different than it was 50 years ago.  The original undergraduate teaching mission of the college is only one of our important missions along with graduate education, funded research, engagement, and globalization.

Welcome to the Class of 2015

My name is Gary Bertoline, and I am the newest dean of Purdue’s College of Technology. I officially start my job July 1, so you and I will be experiencing a lot of firsts together during 2011-12.

It is my responsibility as dean to move the college forward as we continue to prepare students to be technologists in the 21st century. With hard work and strategic thinking, the college will continue to be a national leader in technology, to graduate well-prepared technology students, and to contribute to the solution of the nation’s most pressing needs.
