TechPride Golf scramble to benefit scholarship fund

The 9th Annual TechPride Golf Scramble will take place September 14, 2012, on one of Purdue University’s award-winning golf courses.

The event, planned for the Pete-Dye-designed Kampen Course, raises money for scholarships for College of Technology students. It attracts alumni, faculty and staff, friends of the college and even a few students to play the 18-hole course.

Alternative energy fuels high school students' enthusiasm

Indiana high school students recently tackled the business plans necessary to move alternative energy companies from idea to successful realities.

As part of the Purdue Research Park Entrepreneurship Academy at Purdue University’s College of Technology at South Bend, three teams of high school students worked for a week on ideas to commercialize projects based on wind power, alternative aviation fuel, and fuel made from algae.

Schaffer to lead Statewide Technology

Andy Schaffer has been appointed associate dean for Statewide Technology at Purdue University. In addition to his responsibilities for the administration of Statewide Technology, Schaffer will lead the reengineering initiative for the nine College of Technology locations across Indiana. Schaffer replaces Duane Dunlap, who has been appointed associate dean for engagement for the college.

Schaffer was previously the director of the College of Technology locations at New Albany, Greensburg, Columbus, and Vincennes.

In the news: current economy increases work stress

The Lafayette Journal and Courier talked with Al Crispo, professor in the Department of Technology Leadership and Innovation, about stress in the work place during extended high unemployment.

"Today, with the economic conditions the way they are, companies are feeling stressed and they are turning it on the employees," he told the paper.

Grant for malware research will help to secure networks

Cory Nguyen, a graduate student in computer and information technology, has received a National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowship. More than 3,000 people applied, but only 200 are chosen each year.

The NDSEG Fellowship is sponsored by the Department of Defense (DoD) and is intended to increase the number of U.S citizens and nationals specializing in science and engineering aimed at military applications.  Nguyen received his fellowship in the area of computer and computational sciences for his research in cyber and information security.
