Competitions provide unique learning experiences

A second place finish at the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon 2011 was the climax of more than two years of work for the Purdue University team. Yet the educational benefits for the team members and advisors will continue for years to come. The lessons they learned can help similar large-scale student projects such as Purdue’s EcoCAR 2 team. Both teams have strong ties to the College of Technology.

How did social media impact the Super Bowl experience?

A positive and successful Super Bowl experience in Indianapolis could be a boon for the city for future events and return visits. A group of researchers with Purdue’s College of Technology helped state officials collect public social media posts before, during and after the event to analyze public opinion and reactions related to the Super Bowl XLVI marketing campaign. They are also analyzing general public perceptions of Indianapolis hospitality, accommodations and safety.

Fuehne takes over as director of two Purdue College of Technology locations

Joseph P. Fuehne, Maha Associate Professor of Fluid Power for the College of Technology, has been appointed director of Purdue University’s College of Technology locations at Columbus and Greensburg.

He will oversee operations for both College of Technology locations. The Columbus location is headquartered in the Advanced Manufacturing Center of Excellence, and the Greensburg location operates out of the Greensburg Learning Center.

Paint Purdue Pink events reach out to high school girls

A special one-day event for high school girls will make the connection between technology-focused degrees and solutions to a variety of social challenges. Purdue’s College of Technology locations at Richmond and Anderson will host Paint Purdue Pink in April. The event is being organized to show high school girls how they can make a difference with each of the degrees offered at the locations. “We wanted not only to introduce what they would study, but also how that would translate into a career,” said Michael Swain, student services coordinator at the Richmond location.

Blackboard Learn gets positive feedback in OLS course

A longtime Blackboard Vista user, Professor Dan Lybrook was eager to be one of the instructors testing the new Blackboard Learn, and he’s finding that he’s glad he did. He’s finding that his students are glad he did, too. Instructors will need to begin using Blackboard Learn for their classes by January 2013, but like Lybrook, many are working on converting courses now and for the fall semester. AITP students win awards at national conference

Students from Purdue's Department of Computer and Information Technology won three awards and four honorable mentions during the contest portion of the 2012 AITP National Collegiate Conference in San Antonio, March 29-31. Results include:

  • Database Design (74 teams)
    • First place: Suruchi Shah and Daniel Rouleau
    • Honorable Mention: Nick Conforti and Eric Daugharty
  • Systems Analysis & Design (41 teams)
