Future Work and Learning Faculty on 'Impact UN Global Grand Challenges'
The Polytechnic Research Day took place on November 15, 2023, where research posters from the polytechnic research impact areas were presented by faculty and faculty teams. Over 50 Polytechnic faculty and students attended the interactive event where participants engaged with the presenters about the research being presented. The event provided a unique opportunity to meet the members of all three research impact areas and to network for future collaborations.

Developing an Immersive Learning Framework Using Mixed Reality
Presenter:
Prof. Gaurav Nanda
Collaborators:
Prof. Farid Breidi, Prof. Jose Garcia-Bravo; Students: Israa Azzam, Marvin Durango
In this pilot project, we plan to develop a connected learning framework for a connected student learning experience through real-time interaction between physical and virtual assets in an MR learning environment. It will involve both VR and AR aspects of digitizing virtual objects that interact with the environment and using real-life sensor data and computer models to integrate the real and virtual worlds. We aim to produce new digital environments where physical and digital elements can interact in real-time.
Poster Title:
Toward Prediction of a User's Identity from Missing Biometric Data
Presenter:
Prof. Sudip Vhaduri
Collaborators:
Chia-Hua Lin, Chi-Wei Lien, Jinjin Cai, Marcus Roger
Research outlines a process that starts with the collection of biometric data, such as respiration and heart rate, followed by data preprocessing. The process then involves machine learning and generative AI to distinguish between an authentic user and an imposter, aiming to predict a user's identity even when some biometric data is missing.
Poster Title:
Recognition of Occupants’ Cold Discomfort-Related Actions for Energy-Efficient Buildings
Presenter:
Prof. Kyubyung Kang
Collaborators:
Kwonsik Song, Byung-Cheol Min, Jinwu Xiao
The research explores the use of a deep learning classifier to accurately identify actions indicative of thermal discomfort in occupants seated at a computer desk, aiming to integrate such data into HVAC control systems for enhanced energy efficiency and comfort.
Poster Title:
Using Evidenced Based Practices and Learning to Enhance Critical Thinking Skills in Students Through Data Visualization
Presenter:
Prof. Vetria Byrd
Collaborators:
Prof. Paul Asunda
A design-based research approach is used to empirically investigate the main research questions: (1) after participating in data visualization learning experiences, in what ways do students engage in design practices, (2) in what ways do students engage in design practices that enhance development of critical thinking skills?
Poster Title:
Design with Simulation
Presenter:
Prof. Winston Sealy
The Design with Simulation (DWS) laboratory at Purdue University, conducts novel research at the forefront of Industry 5.0. At the heart of the research is the development of Digital Twins (DT). A digital twin is an online, real-time replica of a real-world item or procedure [1]. DWS research focuses on the integration of physical systems with their DT, and utilizing Mixed Reality (MR) technology for exploration and experimentation within the virtual environment. In this approach, the physical system is better informed based on added information from the DT.
Poster Title:
Market Viability and Design Analysis of Hydraulically Powered Bikes
Presenter:
Prof. Jose Garcia-Bravo
Students:
Quin Howell, Emanuel Lugo-Rodriguez, Ryder Michael
While electrically assisted pedaling is driving growth in the cycling market, there exists ample opportunity for innovative and environmentally friendly alternatives. Most industry attention has focused on advancing e-bike technology, leaving other means of assisted pedaling relatively unexplored. This study delves into the application and market viability of fluid power technology for human powered vehicles, and specifically, bicycles. To assess consumer perception and market potential, a preliminary survey is conducted, for initial validation of a favorable outlook for hydraulically powered bicycles (HPB).
