José Garcia-Bravo

Since joining the faculty of the School of Engineering Technology in the spring of 2015, Dr. Garcia-Bravo has gained national recognition for his work in applied fluid power research and additive manufacturing. Dr. Garcia-Bravo is an expert designer of 3D printed small components for miniaturized fluid power systems. His research includes the use of additive manufacturing for the fabrication of fluid power soft actuators, valves, embedded sensors and low-pressure positive displacement pumps for applications in robotics, industrial and vehicular systems.
Dr. Garcia-Bravo has built a successful and recognized program centered around the area of applied fluid power and additive manufacturing. Dr. Garcia-Bravo has authored or co-authored proposals securing more than $1,200,000 in external funding and an additional $418,000 in internal funds to support his research at Purdue. From these resources, more than $573,700 represent external funds for his effort as PI or co-PI since the start of his position in 2015.
The impact of these projects in society are to be measured by the capital saved in maintenance operations, increased reliability and machine performance of fluid power equipment. His publication output has grown from three journal publications when he started his position in 2015, to 19 published journal papers, with nine more under review as of the summer of 2020. He has authored or co-authored 28 peer reviewed conference papers in nationally and internationally attended conferences in fluid power, smart materials and structures or related fields. Under his leadership, four technical ISO standards have been revised and published or are under revision and, one technical report has been issued.
