Greg Strimel
Yong 349
Dr. Greg J. Strimel is an associate professor of Technology Leadership & Innovation at Purdue University. Within this role he coordinates the Design & Innovation minor degree where he supports students in their pursuits of innovation through cross-disciplinary collaborations. Additionally, he educates pre-service engineering technology teachers on the processes of developing design-based curriculum and maintaining active learning environments/innovation studios. Strimel’s scholarly efforts are focused on increasing student design capabilities and helping to ensure that every student has the opportunity to act, think, and learn like an engineer/designer/innovator. More specifically, his research is focused on enhancing the appropriately scaffolded teaching of design and innovation across P-12 and post-secondary education by studying design-based instructional interventions and design cognition. This work has led to Strimel serving as the lead author for the Framework for P-12 Engineering Learning published by the American Society for Engineering Education as well as the editor of the Engineering in Action article series in the Technology & Engineering Teacher Journal. Through these efforts, he continues to strive toward improving the national landscape of STEM education.
Strimel received a B.S. and M.Ed. in Technology Education from California University of Pennsylvania and a Ph.D. in Occupational and Technical Studies (Engineering & Technology Education) from Old Dominion University. Previously, he was a teaching assistant professor of engineering fundamentals at West Virginia University where he additionally served as the director of K-12 initiatives. Strimel also worked as a high school career/technology department chair and an engineering teacher in Howard County Maryland. Furthermore, he served as an infantryman in the U.S. Army and is a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Dr. Strimel has been recognized with the Distinguished Technology & Engineering Educator designation from the International Technology & Engineering Educators Association, the Council on Technology & Engineering Teacher Education's (CTETE) Outstanding Research Award (2021), the CTETE Outstanding Scholarly Publication Award (2020), Purdue Polytechnic’s Outstanding Faculty in Learning Award (2020), Purdue Polytechnic’s Outstanding Faculty in Engagement Award (2018), Purdue’s Outstanding Student Organization Adviser of the Year Award (2020), Purdue’s Exceptional Early Career Teaching Award (2021), and Purdue's Charles B.
