Dr. Chengcheng Tao is an assistant professor in the School of Construction Management Technology at Purdue University. Dr. Tao earned her Ph.D. degree in civil engineering from the University of Florida. Prior to joining Purdue, Dr. Tao worked as an ORISE postdoctoral research fellow at DOE National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL).
Dr. Tao’s research interests include sustainable construction materials and manufacturing, rheology of non-Newtonian fluids (fresh cement and concrete, liquid epoxy, etc), multi-functional infrastructure materials, hazard-resilient infrastructure, computational mechanics of materials, and AI-driven multi-objective optimization and machine learning applications. Dr. Tao has received support from 18 grants from federal, state, and private sources, including the National Science Foundation (NSF), U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT), American Concrete Institute (ACI), American Chemical Society (ACS), National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM), Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant (IISG), Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), USDOT - University Transportation Center (UTC) - Transportation Infrastructure Precast Innovation Center (TRANS-IPIC), Department of Energy (DOE) - National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL), Purdue Polytechnic Holistic Safety and Security (HSS) Research Impact Area, Purdue Institute for a Sustainable Future (ISF), and Purdue Discovery Undergraduate Interdisciplinary Research Internship (DUIRI). She has published more than 40 papers in peer-reviewed journals such as Computer-Aided Civil and Infrastructure Engineering, Construction and Building Materials, Progress in Organic Coatings, International Journal of Non-Linear Mechanics, Structures, Materials, etc., and conference proceedings such as Transportation Research Record, ASCE INSPIRE, ASCE i3ce, ASCE CRC, etc.
Dr. Tao was selected as the Early-Career Research Fellow by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine - Gulf Research Program (NASEM-GRP) - Offshore Energy Safety track (2023-2025) and received the American Chemical Society - Petroleum Research Fund (ACS-PRF) - Doctoral New Investigator Award in 2023, Purdue Polytechnic Institute Outstanding Faculty in Discovery Award in 2023-2024, SCMT Outstanding Faculty in Discovery Award at Purdue University in 2023-2024 & 2022-2023, Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant Faculty Scholars Award in 2022, and ORISE Postdoctoral Fellowship at DOE-NETL in 2018-2021.
