Outreach & Mentoring

Spring'25: The mAI lab has had a new dimension of outreach. We have had our very first PODCAST (with Google NotebookLM) on our recent publication of multimodal audio-based disease prediction with Transformer-based hierarchical fusion network in the IEEE/ACM Transactions on Audio, Speech, and Language Processing, ranked #1 journal on acoustics and sound, by Google Scholar. While reaching out to community stakeholders of this work through the podcast, we found that the stakeholders rated the podcast an average of 4.9 out of 5 in terms of being helpful in understanding the work without prior technical knowledge, knowing its technical, clinical, and broader impacts, and the future promise the work has enabled.

Fall'24: I was invited to give a research talk (title: Are We Yet There? Utilizing Personal Devices and AI to Improve Healthcare and Empower People) at the Data to Action Seminar at the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering, Indiana University. It was wonderful sharing and discussing our impactful research contributions with the vibrant community of fantastic faculty members and students at IU. I'm very thankful to the organizers for hosting our mAI lab and me.

Summer'24: It was a privilege to become part of the Faculty Panel in a Mini-Course for High School Students -- Planning for Research in College. We had 27 students from different states, including IN, CA, MO, TX, MA, MI, NJ, NY, and WA. I was amazed by the broad spectrum of topics they brought into the discussion. Some asked me -- How can undergraduate research shape a student's future career or academic path? What are you looking for when you want to work with an undergraduate student? How do you mentor and support college students who are new to research?

Spring'24: We had a day-long workshop with Purdue Polytechnic High School (PPHS) students. We spent time with 25 students from three PPHS campuses, two residing in communities with high Social Vulnerability Index scores, and 37% and 25% of the students are Black and Hispanic, respectively. During the hands-on sessions, we demonstrated different smartphone applications to help monitor our daily activities and assess their impact.

Spring'23: As part of the WOWiT: Windows of Opportunity for Women in Technology program, under the initiative of the recruitment, retention, and diversity office, we had a break-out session with rising 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th-grade female students. During the session, we demonstrated how AI and smart technologies are impacting different areas of our daily lives to inspire young minds to pursue STEM careers. The WOWiT participants (left) and my undergraduate and graduate mentees (right).
