Shamima Mithun, a faculty member in Purdue’s Department of Computer and Information Technology in Indianapolis, brings a research background in artificial intelligence and natural language processing with a growing emphasis on teaching innovation to students.

Her doctoral research focused on AI-driven blog summarization, and today she continues exploring how emerging technologies can enhance data analytics and learning environments. “These days I'm also heavily involved in pedagogical research,” Mithun said. “I'm interested in how we can improve students’ learning experience and make them very successful.”

One area of her current work investigates how large language models might help create more inclusive and personalized educational experiences, particularly in support of underrepresented students in computing, including women.

Mithun also highlights the benefit of being located in downtown Indianapolis, where proximity to tech and health care companies creates internship and networking opportunities for students. “Students can work on different internships with different industries, and they have the opportunity to create networking—which is very important to be successful,” she said.

As part of her teaching role, she is developing cross-campus courses offered jointly to students from both Purdue’s West Lafayette and Indianapolis campuses. She is also active in Purdue’s Data Mine program in Indianapolis, where she advises students on industry-collaborative research projects.

“I’m personally very excited being part of Purdue,” she said, citing both “teaching and research opportunities.”
