Julius Keller from Purdue Polytechnic’s School of Aviation and Transportation Technology is leading a new project funded by a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) grant. The program, in collaboration with Purdue Polytechnic High Schools (PPHS) and the Greater Lafayette Career Academy (GLCA), aims to train 80 high school students to earn FAA certifications in aviation and Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS).
“This initiative gives high school students a real pathway into the aviation industry,” Keller said. “We’re focusing on making aviation education accessible and impactful through advanced simulation and hands-on learning.”
Equipping teachers and students
The program features a train-the-trainer model where selected high school teachers are undergoing training in aviation flight and UAS using cutting-edge simulator software. These teachers will guide students through the portable, cost-effective curriculum designed to meet the requirements for both crewed and uncrewed aviation careers.
Building pathways
In addition to preparing students for FAA certifications, the program engages teachers and parents to foster long-term interest in aviation careers. “This is about creating real opportunities,” Keller added. “Students who complete the program will have the tools to pursue further education or go straight into the workforce.”
