Larry Gross, a Professor Emeritus from Purdue Polytechnic’s School of Aviation and Transportation Technology, has been inducted into the 2024 class of the Indiana Aviation Hall of Fame. The honor recognizes his multi-decade career as an educator, pilot and mentor who has shaped the lives of thousands of aviators.
Gross' remarkable 54-year career at Purdue University began when he was a student, enrolling in the Aviation Flight Program in 1965. As an undergraduate, he took advantage of a unique opportunity to fly as a co-pilot on DC-3 aircraft for the university-operated Purdue Airlines, accumulating 120 hours of flight time before he even graduated.
After joining the faculty, Gross dedicated his career to educating the next generation of pilots. He rose through the academic ranks from instructor to associate professor, teaching numerous courses, including a specialized mountain flying course. For 17 years, he served as the director of flight training and was the faculty coach for the successful Purdue Flight Team. His commitment to education earned him inclusion in Purdue’s Book of Great Teachers and the prestigious Dwyer Award for outstanding undergraduate teaching.
His impact extends far beyond the classroom. In 1973, Gross was appointed as an FAA designated pilot examiner, a role he continues to serve in today. He is now the longest-serving pilot examiner in Indiana and one of the longest-serving in the nation, having administered over 7,100 check rides to aspiring aviators.
The Hall of Fame recognizes individuals for their "outstanding and enduring contributions to the history of aviation and aerospace in Indiana." The organization's tribute to Gross notes that thousands of professional pilots around the world credit his guidance, skill and wisdom for their success.
