Construction Management
Field Engineer at M.A Mortenson Company

Describe your potential job duties
In my full-time role as a Field Engineer with Mortenson, I will support the construction of a data center project in Madison, Wisconsin. My responsibilities will likely include helping manage field operations, coordinating with subcontractors, tracking materials and equipment, supporting quality control and safety efforts, reviewing drawings and project documents, assisting with scheduling and daily site logistics, and helping ensure work is completed according to plan. I will also serve as a link between the field and office teams to help keep communication and execution running smoothly.

In what ways did the Polytechnic and/or Purdue help make you uniquely qualified for your new job?
Purdue Polytechnic helped prepare me for this role by combining technical construction knowledge with real-world problem solving, teamwork, and leadership. Through Purdue, I developed a strong understanding of construction processes, project coordination, safety, scheduling, estimating, and technology used in the industry. What makes Purdue unique is that it pushes students to think practically while also preparing them to communicate professionally and lead in fast-paced environments. That combination has made me feel ready to step into a role where I can contribute right away on a complex project like a data center.

How has the college or someone in the college (feel free to name them) helped you achieve your goals?
Purdue Polytechnic has played a huge role in helping me reach this point by giving me both the education and support system I needed to grow professionally. The faculty challenged me to think critically, work collaboratively, and hold myself to a high standard. My professors helped connect classroom learning to the real construction industry, which made a big difference as I pursued internships and eventually accepted a full-time offer. The college gave me the confidence and preparation to turn internship experience into a career opportunity.

What specific classes (titles are more helpful than course numbers) helped prepare you for your new job?
Some of the most helpful classes for preparing me for this role were:
- Leadership and Advanced Project Management
- Building Information Modeling
- Safety in Construction

If you had a favorite class, project, experience, or professor, what/who was it, and why?
One of my favorite experiences at Purdue was working on team based construction projects that simulated real industry conditions, especially projects that required coordination between design, scheduling, estimating, and field planning. I enjoyed these the most because they felt the closest to the work I experienced during my internships and the work I will be doing full-time. Those projects helped me better understand how all parts of a construction project come together and showed me how important teamwork and communication are in this industry

What makes Purdue unique is that it pushes students to think practically while also preparing them to communicate professionally and lead in fast-paced environments. The faculty challenged me to think critically, work collaboratively, and hold myself to a high standard. On top of this, my professors helped connect classroom learning to the real construction industry."
