In what ways did the Polytechnic and/or Purdue help make you uniquely qualified for your new job?
The Polytechnic and Purdue provided a hands-on, project-based education that helped me apply what I learned in real-world settings. I had access to cutting-edge technology, supportive faculty, and collaborative learning environments that pushed me to grow both creatively and professionally. The emphasis on teamwork, design thinking, and problem-solving really prepared me to step confidently into my new role. I also appreciated the networking opportunities and career guidance that helped connect me with industry professionals.
How has the college or someone in the college helped you achieve your goals?
Two individuals from the college played a significant role in helping me achieve my goals. Charles Anthony Elliot Sr. provided consistent guidance throughout my academic journey. He helped me find internships, connect with industry professionals, and was always someone I could count on—ready to lend a hand whenever I needed support. His mentorship made a real difference in my confidence and career direction.
Emily Allison McLaughlin also had a major impact. She offered invaluable real-world advice about the industry, guided me in the right direction, and helped me refine my résumé and portfolio—two critical tools for launching a successful career. Her support helped me feel prepared and competitive as I step into the professional world.
What specific classes helped prepare you for your new job?
One of the most impactful classes that prepared me for my new job was Capstone INTR 42800. It gave me valuable real-world experience by allowing me to work directly with a real client. I had the opportunity to manage project timelines and navigate a simulated budgeting system that felt incredibly realistic. This class gave me a strong sense of what to expect in a professional setting and helped me feel more prepared and confident as I move into my career
If you had a favorite class, project, experience, or professor, what/who was it, and why?
One of my favorite experiences was the JSI Project. It was an incredible opportunity where we worked with a real client JSI, one of the oldest furniture manufacturers in the U.S. For the project, we were tasked with designing a showroom, and we even got to do a site visit in Jasper, Indiana, which was about two hours from campus. Seeing the space in person gave the project a whole new level of depth and realism. It was both challenging and inspiring, and it gave me a true taste of what it's like to work on a professional design project from concept to execution.
Purdue Polytechnic gave me real-world experience and the confidence to launch my career. Hands-on projects like designing a showroom for JSI and courses like Capstone INTR 42800 helped me apply my skills in professional settings.
