What made you decide to choose your specific major?
I chose Cybersecurity because of I enjoy understanding how systems work and using that knowledge to secure networks, data, and users. It is a constantly evolving field, which where I can solve technical problems and prevent attacks, reduce risks, and protect assets. I chose the Polytechnic Institute at Purdue because I felt that this program and college supported those goals. From freshman year onwards, the classes are tailored to the demands of the career field, and the progression of the courses are perfect for a clear learning path.
What are a couple of your favorite things about your program of study?
I enjoy the hands-on aspect of the classes taught for Cybersecurity. At times, it can be difficult for me to understand topics in a lecture setting, so it is very helpful for me to learn the concepts in lecture and then be able to test out the concepts in a lab environment. The labs for my major are very technical and showcase a real life business environment where we can learn the implementation of the concepts we learned in class.
What has been on of your favorite class projects?
My favorite class project so far was for my Network Administrations class, CNIT 344. Throughout the semester, we implemented an enterprise network across multiple routers and switches, simulating a real life office setting. I really enjoyed this project because I learned the basics on how the internet and WiFi worked, and how to troubleshoot technical issues.
What other activities are you involved in on campus?
I am involved in a Christian large group called the Salt Company, where we meet weekly to grow in our religious walks and build community with each other. I also work as a Network Engineering Aide for Purdue IT.
What do you know about your program of study now that you wish someone had told you when you were choosing a major?
I wish I was told how quickly we would be learning cybersecurity concepts. From my very first lecture we were learning the basics of IT and computing. It can be overwhelming at first! But you quickly get the hang of it and it makes the learning of tougher material easier down the line.
What would be one piece of advice for prospective students or new Purdue students?
Enjoy the ride! It can be easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of choosing your major or getting used to campus etc. Make sure you are enjoying the experience as you go along, in whatever stage of life you are in. Remember to take breaks and be mindful of the present that you are currently in, life will work out!
