School of Aviation and Transportation Technology
The faculty and staff of the School of Aviation and Transportation Technology continue to pursue solutions to remedy the aviation industry’s grand challenges. This year, among other initiatives, the school established an accelerated “Degree in 3” program, formed partnerships with industry leaders, launched advanced flight simulators and enacted an Air Force pilot training program.

Department of Computer Graphics Technology
How can students learn when there aren’t enough teachers, especially in remote locations? To address the teacher shortage, professors in the Department of Computer Graphics Technology are creating virtual teacher avatars that can display appropriate emotion and – using webcams – recognize and respond to their remote students’ facial expressions and emotions in real-time.

Department of Computer and Information Technology
Researchers from the Department of Computer and Information Technology (CIT) created a “scorecard” to assess organizations’ abilities to defend against cyber threats. And in February, CIT hosted a 24-hour brainstorming session to “Fight Human Trafficking in the Americas.” More than 200 students contributed ideas; two winning teams incorporated video technologies in their high-tech solutions.

School of Construction Management Technology
In July, the Polytechnic welcomed Ċ½eljko Torbica to the position of professor and head of the School of Construction Management Technology (CMT). Also, CMT faculty and staff hosted the Indiana Building Academy. The day-long conference assembles building professionals from the public, private and non-profit sectors, and gives students the chance to interact with industry professionals.

Besides initiating two new majors (computer engineering technology and energy engineering technology), the School of Engineering Technology (SOET) has established the Intelligent Learning Factory to teach “Industry 4.0” manufacturing technologies. And Ken Burbank, head of SOET, was honored with the McGraw Award by the American Society of Engineering Education.

Department of Technology Leadership and Innovation
The faculty and staff of the Department of Technology Leadership and Innovation (TLI) have made their biannual capstone event – the Design and Innovation Challenge – as interesting and exciting for spectators as it is for students! The winning teams share $10,000 in prize money and scholarship funds for their inventions, such as a high-tech, customizable respirator mask.

Graduate Programs
Purdue Polytechnic launched a new Doctorate of Technology distance-learning program tailored to actively employed, working professionals. The new graduate degree program is the first Doctorate of Technology degree offered completely online by a Tier 1 research university.

Research
Interdisciplinary research in the Purdue Polytechnic Institute uses a socio-technical approach to pursue one goal from many angles and create significant impact on global grand challenges. Study Abroad
Jim Tanoos takes a global approach to helping students study supply chain management. Since 2017, Tanoos has shepherded his students onto planes and into four cities in Europe.

Purdue Polytechnic High School
Purdue Polytechnic High School, a tuition-free public charter school aligned with Purdue University, opened its second Indianapolis location in fall 2019.

Fulbright Scholarship
Phillip Sanger is using a Fulbright Scholarship to study intercultural and gender influences at play in team dynamics by teaching at Kazan National Research Technological University (KNRTU) in Russia.
