Interior Architecture students in Indianapolis win top honors at Interior Design Excellence Awards

Two students from Purdue Polytechnic’s Interior Architecture program in Indianapolis have won the top state-level awards at the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) Indiana Chapter Excellence Awards. The ceremony was held at the Crane Bay Event Center in Indianapolis on Oct. 24, 2025.

Irene Zhang won Best Interior Design Senior Project in the state of Indiana for her work on an evidence-based healthcare design project. Lauren Reed won Best Interior Design Junior Project in the state of Indiana for her design of the Daily Center, a resource center for individuals experiencing housing instability.

Reed's project, which was developed for a commercial interiors course, was designed to create an uplifting and safe environment by using circular shapes, pastel hues, and natural materials like light wood to foster a sense of calm and warmth reminiscent of natural sunlight.

"Considering the homeless population who will utilize the space, creating a safe, calming atmosphere was paramount," Reed wrote in her project description. "This design aims to offer a complete escape from the harsh realities they face daily."

The IIDA Indiana Interior Design Excellence Awards is an annual event celebrating the most innovative and impactful work from professionals and students across the state. This year's theme was "Infinite Horizons," focusing on the limitless possibilities of design. Many other students from Purdue's Interior Architecture program in Indianapolis also attended, connecting with industry leaders and celebrating the achievements of their peers.
